Poggiotondo Chianti 2007 - Waitrose

Currently on offer, as is most shit when I review it, this is a lovely chianti from the sensational 007 vintage. This is a really subtle wine, and also it is a really fine wine.

A very low-key but beautifully complex nose of mint, menthol, caramel and black cherries is followed by a beautifully balanced black cherry palate with a lovely well-integrated acidity. In many ways this is not a typical chianti, but at the same time it is definitely an old-world, though perhaps modern-old-world, style of wine. Maybe less of a bargain at the full price if you're looking for a glugger, but that is not really what this wine is about. A very nice wine indeed, and a superb food wine.
