One from the cellar.
Had a slightly disappointing experience with some Mitolo 2002 GAM I had been cellaring (which seemed past it) so in a mad panic decided to pull out one of my 2003s.
Day 1: On opening, the fruit has calmed down since this wine was in its youth, but not really in a good way - just seems a little dull. There is just something about the acidity which I find a little artificial and therefore disconcerting. The gloopy texture and acidity are just too much for the fruit.
Day 3: Two days after opening, this has come into balance and is now a beautifully concentrated wine with none of the heaviness it exhibited a couple of days ago. Beautiful refined nose with hints of camphor and blueberry and just a little vanilla, with a palate which is not complex but which is concentrated, structured and refined, with red fruits and a little mint. I don;t recognise this wine from day 1 - and I might mistake this for California.
For me, definitely not up to Mr Parker's lofty rating, but a very nice wine which will need a lot of decanting if you drink it now. I wonder how it will continue to develop?
It ain't from the supermarket, so I won't apply a rating this time.
