Cape Mentelle Cabernet Merlot 2006 - Asda

A Margaret river classic. Whilst the flavour profile is not really bordeaux, the weight, balance and general feel of the wine has way more in common with a bordeaux than average fat, oaky, gloopy supermarket aussie slugger. This has uber-cassis, menthol and some bark on the nose, maybe just a hint of creamy vanilla to remind you it has seen some oak. A supremely fresh pure, elegant and well-balanced yet still concentrated style of wine, with a little stemminess (smells and tastes as if some of the grape stems have been chucked in with the grapes - in a good way this time...)

This one comes together more impressively an hour or two after opening. It turns into an Australian Grand-Puy-Lacoste. So yeah, this is very nice on opening, but absolutely f*cking killer after some airtime. You need to let it breath for two hours to understand it... then it is truly special. In the final analysis it may not have the structure or complexity of excellent Bordeaux, but it is just so stylish that I can't help but fall in love with it.

Asda have this on price drop at the moment for £7.20 which is just insane for a wine of this quality. Superb.

Just noticed - Berry Bros want £17.65 for this wine. Which is about right IMHO. Stock up whilst ASDA are doing the business on this one.
