Chateau Ka Source de Rouge 2005 Lebanon - Waitrose

Very nice. Yes, it may be from Lebanon, so you're probably expecting the kinky, weird, exotic Musar thing, but this one is a much more 'straight down the line' kind of fellow. If Musar has an ASBO, this young chap has a Duke of Edinburgh silver award.

Tastes a little like 'old school' tannic Graves with a dollop of syrah added (this is a cabernet sauvignon/syrah/merlot blend.) Blackcurrant and a very faint whiff of Brett on the nose - the barnyard is stronger on opening but seems to dissipate after a few minutes in the glass. And as barnyards go, at least this one is relatively clean.

On the palate this is medium-bodied and gives a clean hit of smoke, black cherry, molasses and a little heat on the finish, but for me, lacks something in the midpalate and finish department. It is a nice wine, but I am finding it a little difficult to get excited about it solo. However, it really comes into its own with food, (I am having it with a Pizza Express takeout, where the balance and 'prettiness' becopme suddenly apparent..)

I reckon this is probably worth the £10.99 as a food wine in the right context, but it won't impress as a £10.99 glugger. At the offer price definitely worth a go, especially if you want something elegant and a little off the wall to drink with Meditteranean /middle eastern cuisine

Chateau Ka Source de Rouge 2005 (Lebanon) 7.5/10 Waitrose £7.99 (on offer until 17th May 2009)
