Penfolds Koonunga Hill 2006 - Waitrose

The Waitrose wine team are missing a trick with this one, as whilst they are selling this wine for a (reduced) £5.99 today, they have not even bothered to indicate that Mr Robert Parker has anointed it with a stellarly impressive 91-point score. They must be off their rocker.....

So this is a seriously seriously nice wine. Unusually, for a supermarket Australian, it is the very antithesis of 'in yer face' so you may need to live with it for a glass or two to 'get it'

A very unique nose which I don’t quite know how to place, probably cassis and figs as well as some other shit no doubt, very pure and primary. This wine is medium bodied, has brilliant balance, the lack of finish would be a concern for a wine of this quality but not of this price. I do wonder if it a little closed as this is pretty light on opening.

An exotic halfway house between Margaret River and a nice young cru bourgeois. Putting on weight with air as I write. As Mr Parker says, 'remarkable focus and structure for its humble price.' That pretty well nails it. I'm putting 6 in the cellar for a decade in the interests of science... And I'll probably sink one or two over the next few weeks as well...

Penfolds Koonunga Hill 2006 - Robert Parker 91, winebums 7-8+/10 Waitrose £7.99 (£5.99 on offer- that is insane!)

Update 16th October 2009. Drinking a second bottle. This is sensational, making an even better impression than the first bottle - a serious bit of kit at a knockdown proce.
