After finishing yesterday's dregs of the acceptable and interesting Washington Hills Merlot, just one sniff of this boy reminds me of how serious the Muriel Reserva can be. Different league on the nose. Amazing fresh dark cherry and incense aromatics.
Blind you might fool me into thinking this was a very expensive wine - and on offer this cost me just over 5 quid which is insane.
Tricky vintage. And OK - this is austere and the tannins are drying. But even so this is meant to be old school, and you have to pay more than a tenner and get pretty lucky to find this quality in Bordeaux (stylistically it is not a million miles from an excellent Graves)
If this were priced at £15 I would feel critical of it. But for a fiver this is excellent. And for some reason, like a DFS sofa, this one always seems to be reduced from ten quid to 5 pounds something. Unlike many other supermarket half price specials, this one really is worth the ten quid full price they quote. For a fiver, buy it all day.
