Having glugged well above my quota of sauv blanc over the last couple of years, i tend to be critical over stuff you can buy at service stations. The oxford landing etc doesnt do it for me. So imagine my contentment at purchasing a very different sauv blanc from one of those M&S simply food service stations.
This is no villa maria, but has something different. At the expense of razor sharpness, comes a very tasty easy drinking sauv blanc with more fruit than acidity. At £7.99 it is not cheap, but it is a great midweeker and offers a soft white wine, with plenty of light fruit flavour that doesnt boast itself on the power of acidity alone. It still has enough clout to carry the badge of very good sauv blanc.
Well worth a look at under a tenner. The chileans are doing it with the whites, like they did with the reds a few years back. This is way nicer than the equivelant priced montana.
Look for a rustic label with a hand emblem on it. Very interesting white wine. Has ample sharpness, and heaviness, without the sour aftermath. Very gluggable and satisfying stuff.

Interesting Paul, would you say this is a halfway house between a Kiwi and a Sancerre?

ReplyDeleteSo do I. But this is what the bums are all about... Keep it coming possum!
NZ is no longer cheap. And today Chile and South Africa are where it is at for an inexpensive but good sauvignon (less grass, less gooseberry and less cats pee, so in some ways more user-friendly than NZ Sauvignons though not knocking the style of a good NZ sauvignon - brilliant when it is on.)
